Chapter 91
In a quiet corner of the campus. Patrick and Lucy could always be seen hanging out. They'd sit under this big tree, sharing laughs and tears.Patrick would gently brush the leaves out of Lucy's hair, and she'd smile at him, her eyes sparkling with happiness. It was like time just stopped for them.
Emily often daydreamed about being in Lucy's shoes, hoping that one day Patrick would look at her the same way. Maybe it was her genuine heart,or maybe it was her past jealous thoughts, but after the SATs, Lucy got really sick.
That summer, right after the SATs, should've been all about fun and looking forward to the future. But out of nowhere, disaster struck.
Lucy.always so cheerful and full of life, was diagnosed with leukemia. The news hit like a ton of bricks, leaving everyone on campus in shock and sadness.
Patrick was in the middle of chatting about plans with his friends when he heard the news. His face went pale, and his eyes filled with disbelief and fear. He couldn't wrap his head arouand the fact that Lucy, always smiling by his side, was now seriously ill.
"No way, this can't be happening! Lucy can't have leukemia. There must be some mistake!" Patrick's voice shook with anxiety. He rushed to the hospital to see for himself.
When he got there and saw Lucy lying in that hospital bed, it felt like his heart was being squeezed. Lucy's face was so pale, and her bright eyes had lost their shnine, She lay there quietly, with a fragile look about her.
"Lucy, you're gonna get better. I promise I'll find a way to cure you."Patrick held her hand tightly, his eyes ful of determination. He swore he'd do whatever it took to make sure she recovered.
Patrick started organizing his classmates to get tested for a bone marrow match. He went around, desperate to find some hope. His eyes were filled with both hope and anxiety as he realized that time was running out for Lucy.
Meanwhile.Emily was dealing with her own problems. Earlier that month, her mom and brother had suddenly fallen ill and needed a lot of medication. To pay for it, Emily had to donate plasma for money.
But even with all that. Emily still went to get tested for a blood type match. While getting her blood drawn, Emily nervously asked the nurse if she could still be tested after donating plasma earlier that month. The nurse scolded her, "You're already weak, and you want to donate bone marrow too?"
Emily remembered the nurse warning her that if she donated blood again, she might develop thalassemia, an incurable disease. The thought of it scared Emily to death.
So after that blood draw, Emily didn't say a word to Patrick and just quietly went back to her dorm. Later, when the classmates who got tested came back, they said only Emily's blood type matched Lucy's-they both had that rare RHAB type. When Patrick heard the news, he searched everywhere for Emily but couldn't find her. He was furious. Emily sat on her bed, hugging her knees, feeling a bit relieved that she didn't have her phone with her. It was the perfect excuse to dodge Patrick.
But deep down, Emily knew she was in the wrong. She skipped school for a few days, too scared to face Patrick. She couldn't bear the thought of his
teary eyes. She felt that if Patrick asked her to die for Lucy, she might just agree. However, she couldn't sacrifice her life for Lucy; she didn't think she was that noble.
Patrick, clueless about Emily's situation, kept looking for her. Without a phone.he had classmates pass on messages. found her class schedule, and waited for her in every classroom. He even waited outside her dorm.calling her name over and over. Some classmates even thought Patrick had developed feelings for Emily now because of Lucy's illness.
Finally, one evening. Patrick found Emily. It was the first time he had ever approached her, but it didn't go well.
"The doctor said your blood type matches Lucy's. You can ask for anything.just please save her." Patrick pleaded, his eyes full of tears.
Emily stayed silent, not knowing how to turn him down. She didn't want everyone to know her family was so poor that she had to donate plasma for money.
Emily had her pride, and she could only meet Patrick's desperate plea with silence.
"Emily, say something! Whatever you want, I'll do it. Just save Lucy,"Patrick begged, gripping her shoulders.
Emily closed her eyes, gritted her teeth, and pushed him away. "I'm really sorry about Lucy, but I can't help. I'm powerless."
Eventually, the Kim family couldn't wait any longer. They heard about a hospital abroad that found a match for Lucy's blood and bone marrow, so they decided to take her there for treatment. This decision left Patrick feeling utterly desperate. He knew this might be Lucy's last hope, but he
couldn't be with her.
On the day Lucy left. Patrick rushed to the airport, frantic. He wanted to see her one last time, to tell her how much he loved her and how much he hoped she'd get better. But when he got there, the Kim family had already boarded the plane with Lucy. Patrick could only watch as the plane took off.
"Lucy, you have to get better. I'll be waiting for you," Patrick's voice echoed in the wind. his eyes filled with tears and longing. He didn't know if he'd ever see Lucy again, his heart filled with fear and unease. And at the same time, he couldn't stop thinking about Emily, the girl with a heart of steel.
