Chapter 1783
chapter1783
Penelope got to her feet too. "Jaime, you go on ahead. I'll change and catch up with you soon."
Jaime nodded, a quick "Alright" escaping his lips as he headed out.
Once he was gone, Penelope's mom stepped into the room. Melissa, with her air of elegance, had overheard Penelope's chat with Jaime.
Casting a glance at her daughter, she said, "I haven't met Keir's niece yet, but Mr. Davis is right. With all you've done for the Davis family, the title of Miss Mira should be yours."
Penelope looked at her mom and sighed, "Mom, sometimes it's best to keep things to yourself."
Melissa seemed a bit frustrated. "You stood by Keir through thick and thin. Where was his niece then? What right does she have to be Miss Mira? Can she even hold a candle to you?"
Feeling a headache coming on, Penelope rubbed her temples. "Enough, Mom. I know what I'm doing. I'm going to change now."
With that, she headed upstairs.
"You..." Melissa called after her, exasperation clear in her voice. "You're just being naive!"
Penelope heard her, but didn't stop.
Once she was in her room, she closed the door behind her, paused for a moment, then pulled out her phone from her coat pocket. She found a number she tried calling earlier but got no answer, and sent a text.
[Is this really how it is?]
Meanwhile, Reid was pacing at the door, nerves evident on his face. He only stopped when Nick's car pulled up.
"Mr. Nick," he said.
Nick stepped out, as calm and collected as ever. He nodded at Reid. "Is everyone here?"
"Yes, sir. The five elders, three
stewards, and the heads of the
family divisions are all waiting" Reid
replied, parting towards the villa next door. "They're all in the
conference room." s
Nick's eyes narrowed slightly. "Eager bunch, aren't they?"
"As soon as Keir had trouble, they've been scheming in the shadows," Reid said, a chill in his voice. "They seem to forget who got the Davis family to where it is now." s s ? ?s f?ndnovel.net
"Miss Mira hasn't arrived yet, right?" Nick asked suddenly.
"Not yet."
Nick nodded. "No need to involve her in this family drama. It'd just be a headache for her."
Reid got the drift and agreed with a nod. It surely would be.
Soon, they entered the conference room. Around the long table, every seat was taken except for the head seat.
Nick glanced at the dozen or so people seated, then took his place to the right of the head seat, a spot reserved just for him. Reid stood behind him.
Across from them sat Penelope, not in the top spot, but in the third position. Her hands rested casually on the table, her gaze lowered, seemingly unnoticed yet, as the only woman in the family with a seat at the table, she was anything but unnoticed. s
The meeting was led by the head elder. After a quick exchange of glances with the other elders, he stood up and began, "Now that everyone's here, let's get started..."
He went through some minor family business before steering the conversation. "Besides these, there's an important issue concerning the Davis family's future." Nick's eyes sparked with interest.
Finally, the old man was getting to the point.
