Chapter 444
Jasmine Keane followed Julian Valdemar in her high heels. Her heart pounded violently as they entered the banquet hall of the Valdemar mansion.
The crystal chandelier's glare made her squint.
Julian's palms grew damp with sweat.
He hadn't stepped foot in the Valdemar estate since that phone call months ago.
The birthday gift he brought was a lacquerware piece purchased with three months' salary.
"Grandfather, I wish you boundless happiness and eternal health."
The Patriarch's fingers hesitated briefly when accepting the gift.
Their last unpleasant encounter still lingered. Yet seeing his grandson's gaunt face, the old man's eyes softened.
"You've come a long way. That's enough."
Julian's tense shoulders visibly relaxed. "I'm glad you're not angry."
"Everyone has their own path." The Patriarch sipped his tea calmly.
Jasmine twisted her fingers anxiously.
"Grandfather Valdemar," she interjected with honeyed sweetness, "May your brilliance rival the sun and moon, your vitality never fade."
The Patriarch finally looked at her.
"And you are?"
Julian immediately clasped Jasmine's hand. "My girlfriend, Jasmine Keane."
The old man studied their joined hands for several seconds before sighing deeply.
"As long as you're certain."
Julian's eyes brightened. "Thank you, Grandfather!"
Jasmine nearly laughed aloud.
She eagerly echoed, "Thank you, Grandfather!"
The Patriarch abruptly set down his teacup.
"It's getting late. You should leave now."
Jasmine's smile froze.
She stared in disbelief as the old man rose with his cane.
Where was the lavish welcome she expected?
Where were the customary gifts?
That bitch Sophia Laurent got three billion, yet she didn't even receive a jewelry box!
Even in the taxi, Jasmine kept looking back.
The Valdemar mansion's lights grew distant as her nails dug into her palms.
